A Greenwood native, Abbott earned degrees in business and journalism from the University of Mississippi before serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. As an Army photographer and news correspondent, he documented the war and received the Army Commendation Medal for his military journalism and photography.

Abbott became editor of The Enterprise-Tocsin in 1970 and spent the next 38 years serving Indianola and Sunflower County through thoughtful, dedicated community journalism. He became a respected leader in Mississippi’s newspaper industry, serving as president of the Mississippi Press Association and earning induction into the MPA Hall of Fame.

In 2003, the University of Mississippi School of Journalism honored Abbott with its prestigious Silver Em Award, recognizing his lifetime contributions to journalism. He also served on the founding team and board of the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola.
