John Logan Power migrated to the United States from his native Ireland when he was 16 years old. In 1855 he settled in Jackson after living briefly in New York and New Orleans.
Power established the Jackson Daily News in 1860 which he edited until the commencement of the Civil War. During the war Logan earned the rank of colonel and was Superintendent of Records for the Confederate Army.
In 1866 Logan established the Mississippi Standard which, after only a few months, merged with The Clarion. Eventually, The Clarion merged with R. H. Henry’s State Ledger to form The Clarion-Ledger in 1888.
In addition to his newspaper work Power served for many years on the Jackson school board. In 1895 he was elected Secretary of State. Logan died on September 23, 1901 while serving in his second term as Secretary of State.
