Mississippi Press unveils online Hall of Fame exhibit

The Mississippi Press Association has completed a historical preservation project that brings the stories of the state's most influential newspaper leaders to a wider audience. Biographies of all 78 members of the Mississippi Press Hall of Fame are now available through a new online exhibit, providing members, researchers and the public with a richer look at the individuals who helped shape journalism in Mississippi.

The exhibit expands significantly on the Hall of Fame's previous online presence, which consisted primarily of a list of inductees. Each biography has been updated and modernized while preserving the accomplishments and historical significance of those honored.

"This is a long overdue project to make the history of our Hall of Fame publicly accessible," said Mississippi Press Executive Director Layne Bruce. "Since its inception, the Hall of Fame has been limited to portraits hanging in our office building and to an online list of names. Now a more complete history is available online for all 78 inductees."

The project also provided MPA with an opportunity to revisit the original Hall of Fame biographies, many of which first appeared in printed induction materials beginning with the inaugural class in 1986. Those biographies were carefully reviewed, edited and expanded where appropriate to improve readability, update historical context and create a more consistent record of each inductee's contributions to Mississippi journalism.

The online exhibit showcases publishers, editors, reporters, executives and other newspaper leaders whose work helped inform communities, defend the First Amendment and strengthen the state's newspaper industry over the past century and beyond. Collectively, their stories reflect the evolution of Mississippi journalism and the enduring role local newspapers have played in documenting the state's history.

The Hall of Fame remains one of the association's highest honors, recognizing individuals whose careers have left a lasting impact on Mississippi newspapers and the profession of journalism.
