Inducted June 24, 2016
Stan Tiner, retired executive editor and vice president of the Sun Herald, is the 2016 inductee into the Mississippi Press Association Hall of Fame.
The Sun Herald, under his guidance, won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2006 for its work in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Tiner and fellow editors Marie Harris and Tony Biffle were that year also finalists for the Pulitzer for editorial writing.
Tiner led the newspaper in many efforts to hold public officials accountable and was a founder of the Secrecy in Mississippi cooperative editorial series among members of the state press corps.
More recently the paper exposed corruption at the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, taking State Auditor Stacey Pickering and the DMR to court.
During his career, Tiner was a top editor at The Shreveport Journal, the Mobile Press-Register, and the Daily Oklahoman in Oklahoma City.
“He has been a tireless champion of transparency in government and of reporting to keep public officials accountable,” said MPA past President Joel McNeece, publisher of The Calhoun County Journal.
A former Marine, Tiner is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Tiner and his wife, Vickie, are the parents of three children and have four grandchildren.
