Veteran journalist Maze named publisher of Greenwood Commonwealth

GREENWOOD—Emmerich Newspapers, Inc., has named Brent Maze s the publisher of The Greenwood Commonwealth.

Maze comes to Greenwood as a 22-year veteran of the newspaper business. He most recently served as the publisher of The Selma Times-Journal in Selma, Alabama, from March 2024 to September 2025.

He said it is an honor to serve in Greenwood, following the legacies of Tim Kalich and John Oliver Emmerich.

“The Greenwood Commonwealth has been among the best newspapers not only in Mississippi, but in the United States,” Maze said. “I am honored with the opportunity to serve as your publisher. My goal is to continue the legacy of excellence of John Oliver Emmerich, Tim Kalich and so many others who have served this community for the past nearly 130 years.”

Maze is no stranger to Emmerich Newspapers, Inc. He served as publisher of The Newton County Appeal from April 2015 until March 2024. He also served as managing editor of the Hartselle Enquirer, Alexander City Outlook and Clanton Advertiser in Alabama prior to becoming a publisher with Emmerich Newspapers. He has also won numerous awards with the Mississippi and Alabama press associations.

He began serving as publisher Oct. 1. He said he is looking forward to working with the great staff here at The Commonwealth and the community.

“We have a great staff here at the Commonwealth,” Maze said. “We will continue to report the news and stories of Greenwood and Leflore County with the same level of excellence as we have done throughout our history. I look forward to meeting you and working with you in the future.”
