A 39-year veteran of Mississippi journalism, Weir devoted most of his career to serving the people of Poplarville and Pearl River County through community newspapering.
Born in Newton in 1909, Weir graduated from Newton High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University, where he served as editor of the student newspaper, The Reflector.
Weir entered newspaper ownership in 1938 when he purchased the Newton County News. Two years later, he sold the newspaper and moved to Poplarville, where he purchased the Weekly Democrat. He served as editor and publisher of the newspaper for the next 34 years, until his death in 1978.
Under Weir’s leadership, the Democrat was regularly recognized for excellence by the Mississippi Press Association, including receiving a General Excellence award. He also was an active member of the Press Association throughout his career.
William Posey, a longtime editor of the Democrat, remembered Weir as a “pioneer” in the Mississippi newspaper industry.
Weir’s commitment to public service extended well beyond the pages of his newspaper. He was active in the Rotary Club, served a term on the Poplarville Board of Aldermen and was a member of First United Methodist Church. In 1960, he was named Poplarville’s Citizen of the Year in recognition of his support for Pearl River Junior College.
Through nearly four decades in journalism, Weir distinguished himself as a dedicated newspaper publisher, community leader and advocate for the institutions and people of the community he served.
